Book One of Fish Boy follows eleven-year-old Cloby, a fiercely curious boy from a river village who breaks a promise to his mother and leaps into a mysterious, glowing underwater whirlpool. Instead of drowning, Cloby discovers he can miraculously breathe and speak underwater, and he is soon guided by Mamba, a massive telepathic golden fish, into the hidden River Kingdom. There, Cloby learns he is "The Called One" and possesses the unique gift of Voice—the rare ability to hear the deeper thoughts and needs of the river and its diverse aquatic citizens.

The tranquil underwater kingdom is soon plunged into a high-stakes conflict when Elias, a grieving father known as "The Collector," deploys advanced underwater drilling machinery to extract the "Heart of the River." Elias falsely believes harvesting this raw power will aid human villages, but his real motive is finding his daughter, Amara, who mysteriously vanished into the currents three years prior. Realizing the danger, Cloby recruits his witty, strategic friend Nala and his fiercely cautious best friend Tubi. Upon entering the kingdom, Nala and Tubi unlock their own magical Guardian destinies: Nala receives the gift of Sight to analyze energy patterns, while Tubi's lifelong anxieties manifest as the gift of Warning, a reliable radar for sensing imminent danger.

As Elias aggressively breaches the sacred River Gate, he inadvertently releases the Shadow Current, a volatile and destructive entity born from centuries of human pollution, grief, and environmental trauma that the original, ancient Guardians lazily chose to sever and lock away. The Shadow Current easily destroys Elias's high-tech machinery and brutally uses the telepathic voice of Amara to trick an impulsive Cloby into cracking the protective Gate Pearl. By grabbing the pearl, Cloby accidentally provides the entity with a physical vessel. The Shadow morphs into a dark, physical doppelgänger wearing Cloby's exact face and launches a massive, uncontained assault that floods both the underwater city and the human village above.

Faced with the consequences of his recklessness, Cloby undergoes a profound maturity shift, learning to put aside his ego and listen to his team. While Elias completes a redemption arc on the surface by using his heavy industrial pumps alongside the villagers to redirect the floodwaters, the children engage the Shadow psychologically in the deepest trenches. The Shadow attempts to break Cloby's spirit by projecting his worst failures and insecurities into his mind. However, Cloby, anchored by his friends, outsmarts the entity by realizing that failure and pain are not the whole story; by embracing both his trauma and his memories of love and forgiveness, he unlocks the spiritual door to the long-dormant gift of the Bridge.

Instead of trying to forcefully destroy or contain the Shadow, the four children work alongside the humbled River Council to open the Heart of the River, welcoming the rogue entity home. The crushing weight of the Shadow's collective pain is beautifully harmonized and balanced alongside generations of human joy, birth, and resilience, neutralizing the monster into a peaceful dark ribbon safely orbiting the Heart. With the flood receded and the river restored, Book One concludes with a community celebration where Cloby accepts his new title, "Fish Boy." As Elias begins dismantling his machines and Mamba heals below, Cloby unrolls an ancient stone map given by his grandmother, tracking the faint, distant lights of the final three unawakened Guardians—Strength, Healing, and Bridge—as a global three-note call echoes from across the world.
